Originally from west Kerry, but a long time resident of Galway, Cian Ó Cíobháin has over three decades of experience DJing in clubs, at festivals and on radio. He has been presenting world renowned, alternative music radio show An Taobh Tuathail (The Other Side) on RTÉ RnaG since 1999 and has been spinning in venues all over the country since the nineties.
In recent times, he has carved a reputation in the wedding world as an in-demand DJ for alternative weddings as well as specialist events all over Ireland. Contact Cian here.
Cian has been DJ-ing since the early ’90s, where he first cut his teeth spinning at school & youth club discos around his native Dingle in Co. Kerry. Later, he held various indie disco club residencies in Galway during his college years. In 1998, he established 110th Street, a much-loved Galway club night which hosted parties with the likes of Andrew Weatherall, Erol Alkan, Soulwax, Optimo, The Glimmer Twins, The Avalanches and many more. He also promoted and DJ’ed at the infamous Boogaloo warehouse-style parties in the Black Box, Galway in the 00’s.
He has DJ-ed at most of the Irish music festivals: Another Love Story, Body & Soul, All Together Now, Other Voices, Electric Picnic, Forbidden Fruit and many more. Post-restrictions, he has been hosting parties under the Disco Dána banner in Hen’s Teeth in Dublin and in other intimate venues around the country.
Cian - described by The Thin Air as “one of the most quietly radical voices in Irish music culture” - has been presenting leftfield music show An Taobh Tuathail (The Other Side) as Gaeilge on RTE RnaG since 1999. The show airs five nights each week, from Monday to Friday.
Singer Gruff Rhys of Super Furry Animals has called Cian’s programme “one of the most radical radio shows in the world”, The Irish Independent has described it as “one of the finest music shows ever produced, on any station”, while Dance Your Way Home author Emma Warren has likened the programme to Andrew Weatherall’s NTS shows.
Over the past decade, Cian has brought his decades of experience of DJing for different crowds to the wedding world. He has established himself as a specialist wedding DJ for discerning music lovers seeking an alternative wedding or festival-style wedding. Many of his weekends are spent spinning all-night DJ sets for music-loving sweethearts, tying the knot in some of Ireland’s most unique and beautiful wedding locations. He occasionally pops up behind the decks at private and corporate events.
From 2000 to 2003, Cian presented Ireland’s first - and only - weekly TV music show exclusively dedicated to electronic music called Rianta on TG4. In 2001, he co-fronted an hour long documentary with Hector ó hEochagáin called Ionsaí Ibiza which trained the camera on a hundred Irish clubbers enjoying a hedonistic week on the Balearic isle.
Over the years, Cian has written extensively about music for Irish language publications Foinse and tuairisc.ie
